Battery fire sparks evacuation of Sydney Airport int'l terminal
Sydney, Jul 10 (Xinhua/UNI) The international terminal at Australia's Sydney Airport was evacuated on Wednesday after smoke from a battery fire filled the departures area, with passengers being told to expect flight delays.
The fire started at around 2:15 pm local time and was quickly extinguished by on-site fire crews.
"Our aviation firefighters have put out a fire in terminal 1 (international)," an Air Services Australia spokesperson said on social media.
"Passengers have been evacuated and delays can be expected for those departing."
According to the Australian newspaper, the battery belonged to a passenger who was returning from a robotics conference held in Sydney this week.
When asked by security to remove the device, the passenger reportedly cut a wire which caused a sudden ignition.
The blaze was quickly extinguished by aviation firefighters, although the departures lounge was filled with dense smoke.
Passengers are now passing through security as normal although delays are expected.
