Harare, Sept 6 (IBNS): Zimbabwe's independence icon, who later turned to an authoritarian leader-Robert Mugabe-died on Thursday.

He was 95.

Mugabe had been receiving treatment in a hospital in Singapore since April. He was ousted in a military coup in 2017 after 37 years in power, reported BBC.

His successor, Emmerson Mnangagwa, confirmed the death of the former President and tweeted: "It is with the utmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe's founding father and former President, Cde Robert Mugabe (1/2)."

The official Twitter handle of the Zimbabwean President said: "Cde Mugabe was an icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people. His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace (2/2)."

Nelson Chamisa, leader of the country's main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), condoled the death of the leader and posted: "My condolences to the Mugabe family and Africa for the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding President. This is a dark moment for the family because a giant among them has fallen. May the Lord comfort them."

US Embassy Harare said: "The United States extends its condolences to the Mugabe family and the people of Zimbabwe as they mourn the passing of former President Robert Mugabe. We join the world in reflecting on his legacy in securing Zimbabwe’s independence."

Mugabe was a Zimbabwean revolutionary and politician who served as Prime Minister of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 1987 and then as President from 1987 to 2017.

He chaired the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) group from 1975 to 1980 and led its successor political party, the ZANU – Patriotic Front (ZANU–PF), from 1980 to 2017.

Ideologically an African nationalist, during the 1970s and 1980s he identified as a Marxist–Leninist.

He identified as a socialist after the 1990s.

His policies have been described as Mugabeism.

Having dominated Zimbabwe's politics for nearly four decades, Mugabe was a controversial figure.

He was praised as a revolutionary hero of the African liberation struggle who helped free Zimbabwe from British colonialism, imperialism, and white minority rule.

Critics accused Mugabe of being a dictator responsible for economic mismanagement, widespread corruption, anti-white racism, human rights abuses, and crimes against humanity.
