UK, EU agree to 'go an extra mile' to get a satisfactory Brexit deal

| @indiablooms | 13 Dec 2020, 10:12 pm

Brussels, Dec 13(UNI) The leaders of the UK and EU on Sunday agreed to carry on with post-Brexit trade talks after the latest round of talks failed to break the deadlock between the two sides.

In a joint statement released on Sunday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said it was "responsible at this point to go the extra mile" to clinch a deal.

Both the leaders agreed to tell their respective negotiators to carry on talks in Brussels "to see whether an agreement can be reached even at this late stage".

Earlier this week, Mr Johnson and Mrs von der Leyen had jointly set Sunday as the deadline to decide whether to abandon negotiations or carry on with them.

Mr Johnson also held discussions with his cabinet about his decision.

Both the sides have been negotiating for a post-Brexit trade deal since March and attempting to secure one before the December 31 deadline, when the two sides would move to trading on World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.
