Cotabato/IBNS: At least 17 people were killed after a military plane carrying at least 85 people crashed in the southern Philippines on Sunday, media reports said.

So far 40 people have been rescued hurt from the burning wreckage of the C-130.

The plane crashed as it attempted to land on Jolo island in Sulu province, General Cirilito Sobejana told AFP.

Many of the passengers of the aircraft had recently graduated from basic military training.

They were being deployed to the restive island as part of a joint task force fighting terrorism in the Muslim-majority region, reported AFP.
