India must bring Russia to discussion table: French envoy
Paris: French envoy to India, Emmanuel Lenain, has said as India shares a good relationship with Russia, it “must bring Moscow to the discussion table”.
Talking about India’s stand on voting in UNGA, Lenain told ANI, “India is a strong country. India has strategic autonomy. We respect India to make its own decision according to its interests and principles so nobody should say what India should do. That is first. Support from India will be very welcomed because India’s voice matters.”
Lenain, replying to the question on India’s humanitarian aid said, “I am sure Indian authorities are first trying to protect their citizens. For any government, this is the first priority. We hope once this issue is solved India’s concern will expand to all the civilians in Ukraine also. Indian authorities told Russia to call for a ceasefire and talks.”
India on Wednesday abstained on a UN General Assembly resolution that strongly disapproved Russia's "aggression against Ukraine", the third abstention by New Delhi in less than a week.
The 193-member General Assembly voted to reaffirm its commitment to recognise Ukraine's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity in the wake of Russia's invasion.
While adopting the resolution the member countries "deplored in the strongest terms" Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
The resolution was adopted with 141 votes in favour, five member states voting against it and 35 abstentions.
