Tokyo: A tourist boat went missing off the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, leaving at least 10 people dead, media reports said on Sunday.
Japan Coast Guard told BBC the search is continuing in frigid waters for 16 others who were on board the Kazu 1 vessel.
The boat called Kazu I reported it took in water off eastern Hokkaido while sightseeing around the scenic Shiretoko Peninsula on Saturday afternoon, and then it went missing, according to the JCG.
The deceased included seven men and three women, it added.
The coast guard said it received the report around 1:15 pm (local time) Saturday and patrol boats were headed to the site around 5:30 pm (local time) Saturday to conduct a rescue, reports Xinhua.
