London/IBNS: Former UK chancellor Rishi Sunak won most of the votes in the first round of voting to succeed Boris Johnson as Conservative Party leader and country's Prime Minister.

Rishi Sunak scored 88 votes, ahead of Penny Mordaunt (67 votes) and Truss Liz (50 votes), according to Reuters.

Finance minister Nadhim Zahawi and former cabinet minister Jeremy Hunt were eliminated.

As per the election schedule, Boris Johnson's successor as Conservative leader is meant to be announced on Sept 5.

The party seeks to rebuild its popular support after it received flak by non-stop scandal.

Rishi Sunak was elected as Conservative MP for Richmond (Yorks) in 2015, which marked his entry into politics.

The 42-year-old Indian-origin leader got a full cabinet role for the first time when he was picked up by Boris Johnson as Chancellor of the Exchequer in February 2020.

Sunak was also fined for defying Covid-19 lockdown protocols and attending a 10, Downing Street gathering.
