Britain's King Charles III and wife Camilla crowned king and queen in London
London/IBNS: Britain's King Charles III and his wife Camilla have been crowned King and Queen in a grand ceremony at Westminster Abbey in central London on Saturday.
They were crowned at the historic church in a service that lasted for about two hours. King Charles III, 74, ascended to the throne in September last year following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
BBC reported: "Wearing his grandfather's crimson velvet robe, King Charles took an oath, was anointed with holy oil, before the St Edward's Crown was placed on his head Camilla, the Queen Consort, was crowned with Queen Mary's Crown in a similar ceremony moments later."
The Royal Family on social media posted about the oath: "His Majesty swears upon a Bible to govern the people with justice and mercy, and to uphold the Anglican Church of England and the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. For the first time at a Coronation, His Majesty also prays for grace to be ‘a blessing to all… of every faith and belief’."
The ceremony was held among the presence of various heads of state and celebrities comprising about 2200 people.
The royal couple arrived for the service in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach after a procession through central London, BBC said.
UK Police have arrested several anti-monarchy protesters near the procession route and near Trafalgar Square.
"Later, the King will make a customary appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony. A flypast involving more than 60 aircraft is planned," reported CNN.
