Kabul, Jul 22 (IBNS) : Sixteen Afghan policemen were killed in a US air strike in the southern province of Helmand, media reports said.

The Guardian quoted the local police as saying that  the attack took place on Friday afternoon when an Afghan police unit retook a checkpoint captured by the Taliban on Thursday. Due to apparent miscommunication, a US gunship bombed the police unit 30 minutes later.

Nato has acknowledged the incident, without detailing how many Afghans died, and promised an investigation.

The US air strikes are part of a Nato mission to support Afghan forces against the Taliban.

The incident followed a week of intensified US airstrikes in Helmand.
