Pakistan court issues arrest warrant against Nawaz Sharif

Islamabad, Oct 26 (IBNS): The Pakistan court has issued an arrest warrant against ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in connection with the corruption cases that sprung from the Panama Papers leak, media reports said.

The former Prime Minister, however, is presently in London along with his wife Kalsum, who is undergoing cancer treatment.

In late July, the Supreme Court announced its verdict in connection with the  Panama Papers case, disqualifying Sharif from holding any public office.

His stepping down brought Nawaz Sharif's third term in power to an unceremonious end.

He stepped down nearly a year before Pakistan would have participated in the scheduled general elections.

The issue of Panama Leaks came to light on April 4, 2016, as part of a massive leak of secret files from a Panamanian law firm that specialises in setting up offshore companies. A trove of 11.5 million digital records from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca last year revealed how world’s wealthy used offshore companies to stash assets.

According to the Panama Papers, three of Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif’s four children – Maryam, Hasan and Hussain – were owners of offshore companies and “were owners or had the right to authorise transactions for several companies.” but the Sharif family has dismissed the allegations of money laundering and denied any wrongdoing.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is the new Pakistan Prime Minister after Sharif's disqualification.
