Dhaka, Oct 28 (IBNS): BNP leader Khaleda Zia's motorcade was attacked by unknown men in Bangladesh's Feni area on Saturday, media reports said.

According to reports, Zia's car, however, remained unscathed.

The former Bangladesh PM left Dhaka and was on her way to Cox's Bazar to meet Rohingya people when the incident occurred, reports said.

According to local media reports, she will  stay overnight in Chittagong and start for the coastal district on Sunday morning.

The attack on the motorcade occurred as it reportedly passed Comilla's Chouddagram and reached Feni's Mohammad Ali Bazar area.

The men, 15 to 20 of them, some carrying firearms, attacked the cars after the car carrying Khaleda crossed the area around 4:45pm, bdnews24.com reported.

There are now 817,000 refugees in Cox's Bazar (the southern-most district of Bangladesh) including 200,000 who had been seeking refuge there prior to the exodus that began in late August. All but 46,000 among them are living in makeshift shelters or displacement sites, set up on hilly terrain.

facing persecution in Myanmar, large number of Rohingya people have escaped their homeland and taken shelter in Bangladesh.
