New York blast suspect's wife, 3 relatives picked up for quizzing in Bangladesh
Dhaka, Dec 12 (IBNS): Dhaka security officials have picked up the wife of Akayed Ullah, the Bangladeshi national who has been arrested in connection with the New York subway blast, and his three relatives from Dhaka and Chittagong.
They have been picked up for questioning.
Akayed’s wife Jannatul Ferdous Jui, father-in-law Julfikar Haidar and mother-in-law Mahfuza Akhtar have been picked up by a team of Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of DMP.
“They were being interrogated at the office of DMP’s Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit on Minto Road,” Additional Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) told The Daily Star.
A Bangladeshi-origin man inspired by the Islamic State has been identified to be responsible for the explosion that hit New York's Port Authority Bus Terminal on Monday, media reports said.
In what is believed as an "attempted terrorist attack", four persons have been left injured including the attacker himself.
The attacker was an immigrant who came to the United States from Bangladesh seven years ago.
He lived in Brooklyn, said reports.
The suspect reportedly was admitted in hospital and then detained by police.
Soon after the attack, city Mayor Bill de Blasio called the incident as an 'attempted terrorist attack'.
Blasio tweeted: "Let's be clear – this was an attempted terrorist attack. Thank God the perpetrator did not achieve his ultimate goals. Our first responders were there quickly and the only injuries we know of right now are minor."
