Sri Lanka President dissolves Parliament from midnight amid political crisis
Colombo: Amid a political crisis, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena is dissolving the Parliament with effect from midnight tonight, said media reports on Friday. Newly appointed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, considered a powerful politician in the island nation, failed to garner the 'magic number' of 113 to prove his majority in Parliament, necessisating the move by the President.
The relevant gazette notification has been sent to the Government printer, the state run Rupavahini announced.
The move will clear the decks for a snap election in the island nation almost two years ahead of schedule.
On Oct 29 former president Mahinda Rajapaksa had assumed charges as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka after President Maithripala Sirisena sacked former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
But Mahinda Rajapaksa lacked majority forcing the President to go for dissolution of the 225-member Parliament.
