CAA may trigger nuclear conflict: Pakistan PM Imran Khan
Geneva/IBNS: Pakistan PM Imran Khan on Tuesday issued a nuclear war threat to India over the last week passed Citizenship (Amendment) Act by the PM Narendra Modi-led government.
Addressing the Global Forum on Refugees in Geneva, Khan was quoted as saying by Dawn News: “We are worried there not only could be a refugee crisis, we are worried it could lead to a conflict between two nuclear-armed countries.”
Meanwhile in India, the Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to put a stay on the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, and issued a notice to the Centre over 60 petitions filed against the new law which will grant citizenship to all non-Muslim refugees who came to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan before 2015.
The top court will hear the case on Jan 22.
The All India Muslim League (AIML), Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh and several activists had filed the petitions.
Several opposition parties have accused the Centre of violating Article 14, which guarantees equality, through the citizenship law.
Over the last few days, protests were witnessed by north-eastern states, West Bengal, Delhi, Mumbai, Tamil Nadu.
Protests had turned violent in West Bengal where several buses, trains were set on fire by agitators.
On Sunday evening, a peaceful protest called by the Jamia Millia University students turned violent when buses were set on fire.
