Pakistan: Imran Khan’s key aide Lt Gen (Retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa resigns as SAPM on information

Islamabad: Pakistan PM Imran Khan’s key aide Lt Gen (Retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa, about whom an investigative report had alleged corruption scams, on Monday quit as  Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Information and Broadcasting.

"I requested the honourable Prime Minister to relinquish me from the additional portfolio of SAPM on Info & broadcasting. He very kindly approved my request," he tweeted.

He will continue his duty as chairman of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority.

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), the nation's financial regulatory agency, has deleted online records of five of six companies owned by family members of China Pakistan Economic Corridor chairman Lt General (retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa, media reports said last month.

The five companies whose data were deleted belonged to the general’s sons, whereas the one company whose data remained throughout on the website belongs to the general’s brothers, Fact Focus reported.

The online records of the five companies were restored on the SECP website weeks later, after the tampering was reported by FactFocus on Thursday, Aug. 27. The government agency is responsible for regulating all companies in Pakistan and its work is expected to be independent of political influence, reported the news report.

Bajwa had earlier rejected all allegations leveled against him and called them 'baseless'.
