Dhaka, Dec 13(UNI) Bangladesh government has signed a procurement agreement with Serum Institute of India, which is producing doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine, an official said on Sunday.

At an official ceremony held here today Bangladesh Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque said that it will get five million shots every month once the vaccine is approved for mass use.

First shipment of the doses are expected to arrive in January, he said.

Bangladesh's Health Ministry had on November 5 linked an MoU with Beximco Pharmaceuticals of Bangladesh and Serum Institute of India to purchase 30 million doses of the vaccine.

Procurement of these 30 million doses would vaccinate 15 million people as two shots are needed per person.

A study published in the Lancet medical journal has claimed that the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine works in an average 70% of cases, with efficacy of 62% for those given two full doses, and of 90% in those given a half then a full dose.

A report by Anadolu news agency said that Bangladesh government has also signed an agreement with the UN's COVAX Facility for receiving vaccines.
