Chinese ships enter Japan's territorial waters: Reports

| @indiablooms | 26 Dec 2020, 06:57 pm

Tokyo/UNI: Japanese local media reports claimed that two Chinese ships entered Japan's territorial waters near the Senkaku Islands on Saturday.

The NHK broadcaster quoted Japan's security service saying that the incident occurred at 4 pm local time (07:00 GMT).

The Japanese Coast Guards contacted the intruders and urged them to leave the country's territorial waters.

Assertive and intrusion activities by Chinese naval forces have become frequent lately as far as Japan territorial waters are concerned.

A similar violation took place earlier this week prompting the Japanese government to express a protest on Wednesday.

In 2020, Japan has registered 24 cases of Chinese ships' violating the sea border. In mid-October, China's vessels entered Japan's territorial waters and refused to turn back for two days. In another such incident in July, Chinese ships drifted in Japan's territorial sea for 39 hours.

China claims the Senkaku islands and calls it Diaoyudao, this matter has for long been a dispute between China and Japan.

Tokyo maintains it has had sovereignty over them since 1895 and Beijing claims that the islands are marked as a Chinese territory on Japanese maps circa 1783 and 1785.

Following World War II, the islands were controlled by the United States and handed over to Japan in 1972.
