Nepal: Dahal’s party to withdraw support from Oli government

Former Nepali Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led CPN-MC will withdraw its support from the Oli government, reported the Himalayan Times. The announcement came when key opposition parties in Nepal are yet to form a coalition for the next government.

The last month’s ruling--to nullify the 2018 merger of the communist parties-- by the country’s Supreme Court by default made Dahal’s CPN-MC an unwilling alliance partner in the Oli government.

Dahal, whose position was politically weakened by the judgment, called the apex court order “unnatural”.

"The SC verdict was like nullifying a marriage and putting a child back into the mother's womb,” he said.

Dahal had been trying to form a consensus with key opposition leaders from the Nepali Congress (NC), and the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) before bringing a no-confidence motion against Oli. However, the JSP remained noncommittal and has also been holding talks with Oli.

On Saturday, Dahal said his party would no longer support the Oli government and withdraw support in a day or two. “We want to do two things simultaneously: register no-trust motion and withdraw support to the government,"  he was quoted as saying by Himalayan Times.

Given the equivocal stance of the JSP, the anti-Oli camp aren’t sure if they would be able to bring down the Oli government.
