Kabul: Nearly a week after coming to power in Afghanistan, Taliban insurgents have issued their first fatwa where they have directed that in Herat province girls will not be allowed to sit in the same classrooms with boys both in  government and private universities, media reports said.

In a three-hour meeting between university lecturers, owners of private institutions, and the Taliban officials, the latter said that there is no alternative and justification for continuing co-education and must be ended, Khaama Press reported.

Mullah Farid, head of higher education of Afghanistan Islamic Emirate who was representing the Taliban in the meeting in Herat province has said as quoted by Khaama Press that co-education should be ended because the system is the root of all evils in society.

Lecturers in Herat province told the news agency that since private institutions cannot afford separate classes, thousands of girls may remain deprived of higher education.

On August 15, the Taliban entered Kabul.

President Ashraf Ghani resigned and fled the country to prevent what he described as bloodshed that would occur if militants stormed the city.

Many countries have since started evacuating their citizens and diplomatic personnel from Afghanistan.
