US to contribute $1 mn emergency assistance for Nepal
"A search and rescue team is preparing for their Nepal departure, and in addition, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) on its way. We will continue providing updates," read a statement issued by the US Embassy here.
"We encourage people in the United States to contact the State Department at NepalEmergencyUSC@state.gov or 1-888-407-4747 to provide us with information about U.S. citizens in Nepal who may be in need of assistance," it said.
Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement: "We are working closely with the government of Nepal to provide assistance and support. Ambassador Bodde has issued a disaster declaration in order to immediately release an initial $1 million for humanitarian assistance. USAID is preparing to deploy a Disaster Assistance Response Team and is activating an Urban Search and Rescue Team to accompany disaster experts and assist with assessments of the situation."
The death toll following Saturday's devastating earthquake in Nepal crossed 2100 with the Himalayan country experiencing fresh quake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale on Sunday, triggering more panic across the nation.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the aftershocks measured 6.7 in the Richter scale.
