Next ISI chief will be announced this week: Pak Minister Fawad Chaudhary

Islamabad/UNI: Amid the ongoing tussle between the Pakistan Army and Prime Minister Imran Khan over the appointment of the country next spymaster, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhary announced on Tuesday that the new Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) director general will be announced this week.

Dawn quoted Chaudhary as denying reports that a new summary with names of candidates for the office of ISI chief had been sent to the Prime Minister Office.

This comes amid an ongoing rift between the Army and the civilian government over the appointment of next ISI chief.

On Oct 6, the army had announced the name of Lieutenant General Nadeem Ahmed Anjum for the post of ISI chief. Meanwhile, incumbent ISI chief Lt Gen Hameed has been made the Peshawar corps commander.

According to The Express Tribune, the appointment of the DG ISI has been the subject of intense debate and discussions after it emerged that the government did not notify the new spymaster despite an announcement made by the ISPR in this regard.

This had led to rumours that Imran Khan-led government and the military were “not on the same page” on this issue.

The government had even confirmed that “proper procedure” was not followed in the appointment process of next ISI chief.
