Bangladesh: Fire burns down Dhaka's Bangabazar clothing market ahead of Eid

Dhaka: A massive fire gutted shops at Bangabazar, one of the biggest clothing markers in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka, on Tuesday as firefighters fought for nearly six hours to bring the flames under control.

The fire tragedy occurred just a few days ahead of the Eid celebration in the country, the major religious festival observed in the Muslim-majority nation.

The blaze was reported at 6:10 am, according to Fire Service spokesman Anwarul Islam Dolon as quoted by bdnews24.

Fifty fire service units, with support from the army and the air force, doused the flames at 12:36 pm.

However, the fire was seen spreading to neighboring buildings as a result of strong winds. Flames could still be observed in various locations, but it is not anything grave, reports Dhaka Tribune.

According to reports, eight people were injured in the fire but no casualty was reported so far.

The injured are Rabiul Islam Antor, 30, Atiqul Rahman Rajon, 35, Niloy, 35, Shahin, 40, Ripon, 40, Rubel, 32, Dulal Mia, 60, Mehedi Hasan, 28, reported Dhaka Tribune.

Al-Amin who owned a shop in Anandabazar for nearly 24 years told bdnews24: “I’ve never seen anything like this fire.”

In 1995, Bangabazar was burnt to ashes before it was rebuilt again.

Owned by Dhaka South City Corporation, the market is divided into four parts namely Bangabazar Complex, Gulistan Unit, Mohanagar Unit, and Adarsha Unit.

As many as 2,370 shops are present in the market.
