Report shows unemployment has spiked in Afghanistan in past 2 years

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) recently released a report and said the number of unemployed people in Afghanistan has increased significantly in the past two years, media reports said.

According to the report, “in addition to other humanitarian crises, unemployment has damaged the lives of millions of people in Afghanistan. People living with disabilities are among the most affected", reports Tolo News.

The body urged international organizations and communities to start investigating in Afghanistan.

“The ICRC welcomes any decision that will enable Afghan families to better cope with the dire economic condition and calls on the international community and development organizations to resume investing in Afghanistan, to prevent the situation from worsening further,” the report reads.

"A large part of this aid is necessary to be used for large infrastructural and economic projects in order to make the employment environment favorable for the people and to reduce the economic problems of the people,” Darya Khan Baheer, an economist, was quoted as saying by Tolo News.

Interestingly, Afghanistan is currently ruled by Taliban forces.

The group snatched power in the country in 2021.
