UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has demanded a United Nations-led independent investigation into the recent developments in Bangladesh that have created a political vacuum in the South Asian nation.

In a statement,  David Lammy said: "The last 2 weeks in Bangladesh have seen unprecedented levels of violence and tragic loss of life. A transitional period has been announced by the Chief of the Army Staff."

He said all sides need to work together to ensure end of violence in the country that has left over 300 people dead so far.

He further said: "The people of Bangladesh deserve a full and independent UN-led investigation into the events of the past few weeks."

He said: "The UK wants to see action taken to ensure Bangladesh a peaceful and democratic future. The UK and Bangladesh have deep people-to-people links and shared Commonwealth values."

Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina was forced to quit and escape to India on Monday amid violent protests against her government which was started by students last month over the issue of quota in government jobs.

The protest soon spiralled and demonstrators demanded Sheikh Hasina's resignation.

Sheikh Hasina was the longest-serving Prime Minister of the country which was formed in 1971.
