Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif has greeted Muhammad Yunus after he took charge of the interim government in Bangladesh following the ouster of former PM Sheikh Hasina and expressed his hope of deepening cooperation between the two countries.

Bangladesh had fought to earn independence from Pakistan's control in 1971.

" Heartiest felicitations to Professor Muhammad Yunus on his swearing-in as Chief Adviser of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. Wishing him great success in guiding Bangladesh towards a harmonious and prosperous future. I look forward to working with him to deepen cooperation between Pakistan and Bangladesh in the days ahead.
@Yunus_Centre," Sharif posted on X congratulating Yunus.

Signalling the beginning of a new era after 15 years of Sheikh Hasina's regime, Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus took oath as the head of the interim government in Bangladesh on Thursday.

"I will uphold, support and protect the constitution and will perform my duties sincerely," Yunus said at the swearing-in event.

The 84-year-old, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for pioneering microcredit and microfinance, which he put into action through the Grameen Bank, was sworn in hours after he returned to Dhaka from Paris, where he had been undergoing medical treatment.

The oath was administered by President Mohammed Shahabuddin at his official residence, Bangabhaban.

Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League government were ousted from power after weeks of protest which initially began with students demonstrating against quota in jobs but soon it spiralled to a major agitation demanding the Former PM's resignation.

Hasina fled to India following the fall of her government creating a political vacuum in the nation.

She was also the longest-serving PM of the nation.

She won the last national polls in January to begin another term in power.
