Dhaka/IBNS: The HSC and equivalent examinations in Bangladesh, which were postponed earlier, have been called off completely amid protests from a section of students who demanded that they have to be qualified without any test, media reports said. However, Anti-Discrimination Movement student leaders said the decision taken after the protest by a group is illogical and should be reversed.

A section of students reached the secretariat on Wednesday and demanded the cancellation of the examinations, which were postponed earlier.

The examinations were postponed in multiple phases due to anti-quota protests.

From July 18 to August 1, examinations have been postponed to multiple dates.

However, the cancellation of the examination has been confirmed on Wednesday. Dhaka Board Chairman Professor Tapan Kumar Sarkar confirmed the news.

The method to prepare the results will be decided later.

According to The Daily Post, a source at the education board said that after Sheikh Hasina's deposition, the trunk containing question papers was damaged in the attacks on police stations in different areas. "For this, the decision to take the test from August 11 was postponed. The Education Board proposed to the interim government to take the postponed examinations from September 11. It was also approved," the daily reported.

The candidates are keen to have results on the basis of the number of subjects on which examinations have been conducted.

However, Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, coordinators of anti-discrimination student protest, said cancellation is a bad development and the exams should have been held.

The student leaders told a Bangladesh publication: "We do not support the cancellation under any circumstances."

They said various groups are taking to streets with unreasonable demands with different motives under the present circumstances and forcing such decisions.

“Those who had sought cancellation of the HSC and equivalent exams do not know how to evaluate merit. The exams had to be taken. The decision to cancel the tests is illogical,” Alam told the media while visiting the injured at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday, reported bdnews24.com

Hasnat Abdullah said the HSC candidates who had stormed the Secretariat on Tuesday confined all officials, including the education secretary, the portal reported quoting the student leader.

The decision to cancel the remaining exams was taken in consultation with the secretary, education advisor and the chief advisor under such a circumstances, they said.

Bangladesh is currently under the rule of an interim government, led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, after Sheikh Hasina resigned as the Prime Minister and fled to India facing massive protests.
