Al Franken to resign, Bernie Sanders urges Trump to take a hint

Washington, Dec 8 (IBNS): Engulfed by sexual allegations, US Senator Al Franken has announced his decision to step down in the coming weeks.

Franken, who downplayed some of the allegations as "are simply are not true", said he may give up his post but not his voice.

"I am proud that during my time in the Senate that I have used my power to be a champion of women," Franken said from the US Senate floor.

However, Franken might be the most prominent leader to find himself accused of sexual allegations in recent months, but he's not alone.

Trent Franks and Blake Farenthold too will face investigation for sexual misconduct.

According to the US House of Representatives Ethics Committee, Farenthold used $84,000 of taxpayers' money to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit with one of his former colleagues.

Franks, who admitted having asked favours from two of his female colleagues and made them uncomfortable, resigned after the inquiry was ordered.

Meanwhile, Franken, a former comedian and Saturday Night Live performer, also pointed at the existing irony in US politics.

"I, of all people, am aware that there is some irony in the fact that I am leaving while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assault sits in the Oval Office, and a man who has repeatedly preyed on young girls campaigns for the Senate with the full support of his party," he said, pointing his finger towards US President Donald Trump and Republican Senate Candidate for Alabama, Roy Moore.

Following Franken's attack, Senator Bernie Sanders too took a barb at Trump.

"We have a president who acknowledged on tape that he assaulted women. I would hope that he pays attention to what's going on and think about resigning," the senior politician tweeted.
