Canada PM Justin Trudeau celebrates Tamil festival Pongal

Toronto, Jan 17 (IBNS): Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday celebrated Tamil harvest festival, Pongal, with several Tamil Canadians residing in his country, media reports said.

Trudeau, who is often seen to celebrate Indian festivals, was seen celebrating the festival.

The PM also shared some of the pictures of the South Indian festival on his official Twitter handle.

He wished all his Tamil Canadians on the social networking site saying, " Iniya Thai Pongal Nalvazhthukkal! " which means "Sweet Pongal Greetings".

Trudeau captioned the pictures saying: "Iniya Thai Pongal Nalvazhthukkal! Had a great time celebrating Tamil Heritage Month and Thai Pongal in Scarborough this evening. "

Toronto Mayor John Tory accompanied Trudeau in the celebration of the festival and also assisted the PM in preparing the Pongal meal, media reports said.

Pongal is a four-day Tamil harvest festival which is dedicated to Sun. It is celebrated between Jan 14-17.

The festival is largely celebrated in Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
