Ottawa, Feb 14 (IBNS): Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will shortly announce a legal framework to protect the interests of Indigenous people in the country, CTV News reported.

The new framework will ensure some form of a guarantee to the Indigenous people, the report said.

Though the current law also aims to mete out justice to the Indigenous people but the victims often had to approach to exercise their rights.

Trudeau is expected to give a speech in the House of Commons this afternoon.

Trudeau's expected announcement is coming after his meet with the family of Indigenous man Colten Boushie, who was killed in 2016.

Boushie, who hailed from the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, was on white man Gerald Stanley's farm house on August 9, 2016.

Boushie was accompanied by some of his friends.

It was in the far house, Boushie was shot three times. After the third bullet hit Boushie on his head, he succumbed.

Stanley, 56, was acquitted of the second-degree murder.

After meeting Trudeau, Boushie's cousin Jade Tootoosis said: "Everyone we've talked to has been very engaged, respectful and took the time to hear our pain, hear our strength and hear us speak from the heart, including Prime Minister Trudeau, and for that we're very appreciative."

She said the Canadian officials have agreed to restructure the judicial system.

"And that's exactly what we came here for," she added.

Tootoosis was quoted by BBC.

The acquittal by all-white jury had sparked widespread controversy across the country.

The family had filed a review of the police investigation of Boushie's death.

Stanley's lawyers said Boushie along with his friends were trying to steal a vehicle and it is then an accidental encounter had occurred.

The issue was also raised in a public interaction with Trudeau.

A woman had complained against the distinct treatment against the Indigenous people. She said the Indigenous people are facing racism.

The woman said: "Racism is alive and real right now in Canada. It is happening to Tina Fontaine’s family. It is happening to Colten Boushie’s family."

"What are you going to do for our communities because I don’t see you doing a lot, and that kind of hurts my heart" she added.

Trudeau said the status quo is unacceptable.
