Burnaby, Mar 24 (IBNS): Green party leader Elizabeth May and New Democrat MP Kennedy Stewart were arrested following their protest against the expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline in British Columbia, media reports said.

Both the leaders joined the demonstrators at the Trans Mountain Pipeline terminal.

May has alleged that the permit issued for the pipeline project did not respect the rights of the indigenous people of the territory.

She was quoted by CTV News, "The commitment to build a pipeline in 2018 when we are in climate crisis is a crime against future generations and I will not be part of it."

"I'm a lawyer, I have deep respect for our courts, I have deep respect for the rule of the law. Frankly, the fact (is) that the federal government and Kinder Morgan are not waiting to see if their permits are legal before cutting down trees within parks in Burnaby, B.C., ignoring the wishes of mayor and council in Burnaby and trampling on the rights of First Nations" she added.

May has also said that she is ready to face the consequences.

In an interaction with media, Stewart said she was just supporting the constituents in Burnaby South being aware of the legal risk she faced.

The expansion of the pipeline will increase its capacity from 300,000 barrels to 900,000 barrels.
