Canada Foreign Minister Freeland to promote Canada's multilateralism & oppose U.S.tariffs

Ottawa, Jun 13 (IBNS): During her two-day visit to Washington, Chrystia Freeland, Canada's foreign affairs minister, would be promoting Canada's support for multilateralism, and its opposition to recently imposed tariffs by United States (U.S.), media reports said.

U.S. president Donald Trump's decision on June 1 to place tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada, Mexico, and the European Union was a blow to G7 leaders' efforts to convince Trump to reverse his policy.

G7 leaders is a group consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The imposition of U.S.tariffs had been opposed both by Canada and Mexico since it would reportedly create instability in investment.

In fact many Canadian companies across the country had already started to reconsider their investment policies and plans.

While in Washington, Freeland, who had been named Diplomat of the Year by Foreign Policy magazine, is hoping to draw large crowds during her acceptance speech in an awards gala  in front of ambassadors, journalists and lawmakers.

Freeland would also try to re-establish trade talks with the U.S. hoping to see lifting of U.S. tariffs.
