NDP leader Jagmeet Singh calls on PM Trudeau to call by-elections
Ottawa, Sept 15 (IBNS): New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh has called on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to conduct by-elections quickly in few ridings where there are current or will have vacancies, media reports said.
The by-elections are due in five ridings, Leeds-Grenville, Ont., Outremont, Que., Burnaby South, B.C., York-Simcoe, Ont. and Saint-Léonard-Saint-Michel, Que.
When asked whether he is worried that Liberals could delay the by-elections, Singh said as he has been quoted by CTV News: "I’m worried about the fact that the people of Burnaby South and in fact the four other byelections don’t have representation.
"I’m worried about the fact that they deserve to have representation and this government is not calling the byelection or letting us know when they are going to call it."
Once the vacancies will be official, Trudeau will have 180 days to call by-elections in the particular ridings.
The next federal elections will be held in Oct, 2019.
