Washington, Dec 5 (IBNS): US President Barack Obama on Friday nominated ex-Pentagon official Ashton Carter as the new defence secretary of the country, officials said.

He will replace Chuck Hagel.

Hagel had resigned from the post last month.

"President Barack Obama announced his selection of Ashton B. Carter to be the next defense secretary following the resignation of Chuck Hagel, who will remain in office until the U.S. Senate confirms a successor. Carter served as deputy defense secretary from October 2011 to December 2013, and prior to that served as undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics," read the website of the US Department of Defense.
