US mid-term polls: Democrats to retain control of Senate after winning key Nevada race
Washington: The Democrats will maintain their hold in Congress after Catherine Cortez Masto won re-election in Nevada, handing a major victory to President Joe Biden, media reports said.
Masto defeated Republican candidate Adam Laxalt in a close fight. Laxalt's name further lengthened the list of losing candidates backed by former US President Donald Trump.
The results amount to the best midterm performance for a sitting party in 20 years, BBC reported.
Democratic Senate Majority leader, Chuck Schumer said the results reflect that the American people have rejected the violent rhetoric of the Republican part.y
Underlining the cause of the defeat of his party, a Republican candidate told a US media on Saturday that the stronger the connection of candidates with Donald Trump, and the ultra-MAGA movement, and their belief in this false notion that the 2020 election was stolen from him, the more they lost.
This is happening despite President Joe Biden's approval rating being at an all-time low, he added.
Meanwhile, the latest result showed that the Democrats will now have 50 Senate seats, with Republicans currently on 49.
Vice-President Kamala Harris has the casting vote if the Senate is divided equally between the two parties.
Georgia is yet to vote where polling is scheduled in December.
The Republicans could still take control of the US House of Representatives as votes continue to be tallied from a handful of districts after Tuesday's elections stated the BBC report.
If the Republicans win the House they could still thwart much of Biden's agenda, it added.
