The price of silence on extremism: Why Canadian politicians must act now

| @indiablooms | 15 Jul 2024, 05:54 pm

Yesterday’s shocking assassination attempt on President Trump serves as a grim wake-up call for political leaders around the world.

While the immediate focus is on ensuring the safety and security of public figures, this incident should also prompt Canadian politicians to take a hard look at some uncomfortable realities closer to home.

Specifically, it’s time to confront the troubling issue of Khalistan supporters and their actions within Canada.

The public celebration of the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her bodyguards turned assassins is not just distasteful; it is a glorification of violence that has no place in a civilized society. Indira Gandhi’s assassination was a tragic moment in history, and celebrating such an event only serves to deepen divisions and spread hatred. Canadian leaders must unequivocally condemn these celebrations, making it clear that such expressions of joy over acts of terror are unacceptable.

Moreover, the Air India bombing, which remains the deadliest act of aviation terrorism in Canadian history, should be a solemn reminder of the devastating impact of terrorism. It is deeply concerning that some rallies and events within Canada still celebrate this horrific event and glorify the terrorists responsible for it. Politicians must stop attending such gatherings and unequivocally denounce them. By participating in these events, they inadvertently lend legitimacy to the cause of those who perpetrate violence and terror.

The targeting of Indians by Khalistani extremists is another issue that cannot be ignored. These acts of aggression and intimidation are a clear violation of the principles of peace and multiculturalism that Canada prides itself on. It is imperative for Canadian politicians to call out and confront these extremists, ensuring that the Indian community within Canada feels safe and respected.

Hillary Clinton’s poignant words ring true: “You cannot keep snakes in your backyard and expect them not to bite you.” Tolerating or ignoring the actions of extremists within Canadian borders is a dangerous gamble. The celebration of assassinations, glorification of terrorism, and targeting of ethnic communities are issues that demand immediate and decisive action.

The assassination attempt on President Trump is a stark reminder of the volatility and unpredictability of extremist violence. It is a call to action for Canadian politicians to stand firm against all forms of terrorism and extremism. This means not just protecting the leaders but also ensuring that the society does not become a breeding ground for hatred and violence.

Condemnation, vigilance, and proactive measures are essential. Canadian politicians must take a stand now, before it is too late. The safety of leaders and the harmony of society depend on it.
