10 including a Russian killed in Nepal accident
According to information received, the accident took place during the wee-hours on Saturday at national highway in Makwanpur district’s Basamadi area, 33 km south of capital Kathmandu. "The collision took place around 2:15 this morning.
10 people have died, including a Russian woman," local police official Prakash Jung Karki is quoted by media as saying.
It has been learnt that among the deceased, eight people died at the spot, while two others succumbed at the hospital.
30 others, all passengers of the buses received injuries have been shifted to hospital where they are undergoing treatment.
Local media reported that 12 of the injured were said to be in a critical condition.
They were rushed to Bharatpur Hospital.
“The Russian killed in the accident was identified as a woman named Daria Mojkova,” media quoted Nepal Police as saying.
Initial investigations have suggested that one of the two bus drivers was driving at a high speed and apparently lost control over his vehicle, leading to the collision.
Accidents are relatively common on Nepal's highways because of poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.
It has been reported that, eight days earlier, a crowded bus plunged down a hill in a town outside Kathmandu, killing at least 14 people, including two Israelis.
