Kabul, May 3 (IBNS): At least 2100 people have been killed in a massive landslide which hit Afghanistan's northeastern province of Badakhshan on Friday, media reports said on Saturday.

The landslide buried an entire village in the area.

Several people are still missing. Rescuers are trying to evacuate those trapped under mud and rocks.

“It is impossible rescuing the people trapped under the rubble,”  Abdullah Dehqan, the Natural Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) director for the province, was quoted as saying by Pajhwok Afghan News.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh  on Saturday said shocked and saddened by the natural disaster which hit Afghanistan.

"I am deeply shocked and saddened by the devastating natural disaster that has struck Badakhshan province in Afghanistan. The people of India stand with their Afghan friends in grieving for those who have perished or are missing," Singh said in a statement.

Assuring assistance and support to the people of the Asian nation, Singh said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with them in this hour of pain and sorrow. We know that the Afghan people will face up to this tragedy with their unmatched courage and fortitude. India stands ready to provide whatever assistance and support that we can for rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts to help the victims of this enormous disaster."
