Bangladesh witnesses highest single-day spike of 2523 COVID cases

Dhaka/uni: Bangladesh on Friday recorded the biggest daily jump of 2523 cases of Novel Coronavirus, taking the country's total infections to 42,844.

The country also reported more than 2000 COVID-19 patients on Thursday, as the deadly virus kept rising fast.

In the past 24 hours, the highest number of 11,301 samples were examined. Out of them, 2523 tested positive for Coronavirus, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) ADG Prof Nasima Sultana said.

During the period, 23 more people died from the deadly disease, taking the tally to 582, Dr Sultana mentioned in the DGHS' regular bulletin on the pathogen.

The official further said that a total of 9,015 COVID-19 patients recovered, with 590 new ones. She also said that a total of 2,87,067 samples were examined, since the outbreak started in the country.

Prof Nasima called on all to stay at home and follow health guidelines issued by the health department to stem the transmission of the pathogen.

Bangladesh first reported its Novel Coronavirus cases on March 8. Since then, the country has been witnessing increase in the infections and deaths.

The highly contagious virus first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year, and then spread to 213 countries and territories.

As of Friday, the pathogen infected 5,920,258 people and killed 362,365 across the globe, according to Worldometer, a website which compiles number of new coronavirus cases and deaths from it.

However, total recovery from the pandemic reached 2,592,085 across the world.
