Ottawa/IBNS: A new round of Canada’s sanctions against Russia has been announced by foreign affairs minister, Mélanie Joly, including industrial oil and gas manufacturing in an effort to limit Moscow’s ability to wage war in Ukraine

Canadian services will be prohibited by the new measures from contributing to the production of goods made by these sectors, a statement released by Global Affairs Canada said.

Joly made the announcement while attending the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Bali, Indonesia.

“The Russian propaganda machine must answer for its lies. Canada is committed to fighting disinformation wherever and whenever it is found,” Joly said in the statement.

“Today, we make it clear to those who peddle deception: You will be held accountable. Canada stands with Ukraine.”

The statement also said that altogether, oil, gas, chemical, and manufacturing make up more than 50 per cent of Russia’s federal revenues.

In addition to land and pipeline transport, the latest sanctions will include the manufacturing of metals, as well as transport, computer, electronic, and electrical equipment manufacturing and machinery.

Canadian businesses will have 60 days to comply with the sanctions.

The announcement follows a day after the federal government’s announcement of additional sanctions against Russian media, as well as the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Vladimir Mikhailovich Gundyayev, who has spoken favourably of Putin’s war in Ukraine.

Canada also announced the prohibition of the import of certain gold products from Russia including unwrought gold, semi-manufactured gold, gold powder, monetary gold, and jewellery made of gold.
