Canada: Trump speaks to Trudeau over phone, stresses on fast NAFTA deal

Ottawa, Mar 13 (IBNS): In a phone interaction with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, US President Donald Trump has stressed on a fast completion of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiations, media reports said.

Trump's eagerness to seal the deal of NAFTA came months after the US and Canada were on the loggerheads on this issue.

Reacting to Trump's urge, Trudeau told CNN that Canada is glad to see the US is eager to seal the deal.

Days ago, Trump had kind of blackmailed Canada by saying the US will exempt its neighbouring country from the latest trade tariffs only when a new NAFTA is signed.

Later, Canada and Mexico were exempted from the imposition of the trade tariffs. Mexico is also a member nation of the trade deal.

NAFTA is an agreement which came into force from January 1994 by Canada, Mexico and United States creating a trilateral trade bloc in North America.

For more than two years, US President Trump criticised the agreement and also hinted to take some serious steps being in the administration or at least send some ultimatums.

Trump reportedly wants the treaty to be more fair.
