Canada's Conservative leader Erin O'Toole faces internal revolt, party MPs oppose his leadership

Ottawa/IBNS: Canada's Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole is facing internal revolt as the party's Members of Parliament (MPs) are opposing his leadership, indicating enough support to trigger a caucus leadership review.

O'Toole reportedly said Monday night that he welcomes a vote on his leadership after members indicated earlier in the evening there was enough support within the party to trigger a leadership review.

"I'm not going anywhere and I'm not turning back," O'Toole said in a statement. "It's time for a reckoning. To settle this in caucus. Right here. Right now. Once and for all."

Conservative MPs opposing O'Toole's leadership have reportedly collected 35 signatures so far to hold a secret ballot to decide his fate.

A letter with the names of the anti-O'Toole MPs was reportedly presented to Scott Reid, the Conservative caucus chair.

Reid in a memo to all Tory MPs said that he is prepared to have the vote during Wednesday's national caucus meeting.

The anti-O'Toole contingent reportedly said that they have more than enough signatures for the secret ballot process until they could assure that a majority of MPs were ready to cast him aside.

Bert Chen, a now-suspended member of the party's national council, had been calling for his resignation since the day after the September election for his reported failure on carbon pricing, firearms, and balanced budgets.
