China charges two Canadians with spying

Beijing/UNI: Prosecutors in China on Friday have officially charged two Canadian nationals working as business executives in the country with spying.

Two Canadian nationals Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor were charged with identical charges of spying by prosecutors in Beijing and Dandong, Liaoning province.

Sputnik quoted that the duo have been under arrest since 2018, shortly after a top Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou was detained in Canada in 2018.

Meng is facing the possibility of extradition to the United States as US prosecutors accused her of being a part of a company that helped countries like Iran and North Korea to evade US sanctions.

Beijing made repeated calls for Meng’s release, but Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stressed the independence of Canada’s judicial system. As expected, Beijing also cited China’s judicial system’s independence and denied that the cases against the two Canadian nationals were politically motivated.

Arrest of the two men has led to souring of relations between China and Canada.
