Countering Taliban: Former Afghan officials form govt in exile
Kabul: A number of former Afghan officials who have fled the country along with President Ashraf Ghani have now announced the formation of a government in exile, media reports said.
A statement released by the Afghan embassy in Swiss reads that the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is the only legitimate government of Afghanistan that is elected by the votes of people and no other government can replace a legitimate one, reports Khaama Press.
According to reports, Afghanistan leader Amrullah Saleh, who was leading the Panjshir resistance that fell earlier this month, will head the government in exile.
“After the escape of Ashraf Ghani and his rupture with Afghan politics, his first vice-president (Amrullah Saleh) will be leading the country," the statement said.
The Taliban captured Afghanistan last month after taking control over Kabul on Aug 15.
The Taliban started capturing the country once foreign forces started leaving the nation.
