Paris, Dec 14 (IBNS): The key suspect in Strasbourg's Christmas market on Tuesday has been shot dead by the French police, media reports said on Friday.

A police unit came across Cherif Chekatt in a Strasbourg street and shot him after he opened fire, reported BBC.

Cherif Chekatt, 29, was suspected to be the man behind the attack that left at least three people.

Hundreds of police officers, soldiers and anti-terror specialists were searching for him since the incident took place on Tuesday.

French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner was quoted as saying by CNN: "As I am speaking to you, I am thinking about the victims and the wounded. I am thinking of those close to them. I am thinking of Strasbourg and France that was hit by this terrible attack."

Five others were arrested in connection with the incident.

They include Cherif Chekatt's parents and two of his brothers, reported BBC.

Police Nationale 67 tweeted: "#Strasbourg this evening, it is the whole of the forces of the order, all services, all directions, which thank you for your confidence and your support."
