Beirut, Jun 4 (Xinhua/UNI) An Islamic State (IS) member blew himself up Tuesday in Lebanon's northern city of Tripoli after being cornered by the army and Internal Security Forces.

The IS member, Abdel-Rahman Mabsout, was hiding in a building which was raided by security forces in a two-hour operation.

Mabsout opened fire late Monday at the Lebanese Army and Internal Security Forces at Tripoli's Serail and a bank, killing one police officer and two soldiers, according to the statement.

The reason for the attack was still unknown. But Elnashra, an independent online newspaper, reported that Mabsout had fought with IS in Syria.

Former Interior Minister Nohad Machnouk announced earlier this year that Internal Security Forces succeeded in thwarting nine terrorist attacks in 2018.
