Israeli live fire at Gaza border hurts 16 Palestinians: Health Ministry

Gaza, Mar 8 (Sputnik/UNI): At least 16 Palestinians were wounded by Israeli live fire on Friday as they marched to the eastern border of the Gaza exclave, the Palestinian Health Ministry spokeswoman said.

Thousands of Palestinians have been rallying every week since last March to demand access to what they consider to be their ancestral land in Israel, prompting clashes with Israeli border guards.

"On the 50th Friday of the Great March of Return east of the Gaza Strip, Israeli occupation forces hit 16 people with live fire," Wafaa Yagi said in a statement seen by Sputnik.

Gazan Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qidra said later that one Palestinian had died of a gunshot wound he sustained during clashes in the southern city of Rafah. He added 42 others had been hurt in Gaza's east.

Israel has denied all accusations of using lethal force disproportionately. It has accused the Hamas militant group, Gaza’s administration, of provoking clashes to sneak into Israel to carry out terror attacks.
