Lam wins HK chief executive election
The Electoral Affairs Commission of the Hong Kong SAR declared that Lam has gained 777 of 1,163 valid votes.
She had the backing of the Chinese government in Beijing.
In the acceptance speech, the leader was quoted as saying by BBC: "Hong Kong, our home, is suffering from quite a serious divisiveness and has accumulated a lot of frustrations. My priority will be to heal the divide."
Meanwhile, her opponents Tsang Chun-wah gained 365 and Woo Kwok-hing clinched 21 votes.
Meanwhile, pro-democracy groups demonstrated close to the election venue.
According to reports, they called the entire process of election of the new leader as sham.
Earlier, a series of sit-in street protests, often called the Umbrella Revolution and sometimes used interchangeably with Umbrella Movement, occurred in Hong Kong from Sept 26 to Dec 15, 2014.
The protests began after the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPCSC) issued a decision regarding proposed reforms to the Hong Kong electoral system.
