Oscar nomination for Hong Kong protest film: China directs local media not to show Oscars live

A documentary on the Hong Kong protests has been nominated for the Oscars, forcing the Chinese government to direct local media to cancel live broadcasts of the ceremony and to play down coverage of the event, media reports said on Saturday.

The Communist Party’s propaganda department issued the order to all media outlets, said the people, declining to be identified given the sensitivity of the issue. Outlets were told that Oscars coverage should focus on awards that aren’t seen as controversial, according to the people, reports Bloomberg.

Do Not Split is a 2020 American-Norwegian documentary film directed by Anders Hammer. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject at the 93rd Academy Awards.

The 35-minute feature, directed by Norwegian documentarian Anders Hammer, captures the mass marches against the extradition law, the movement’s gradual descent into violence, and the protesters’ increasing desperation in the lead up to Beijing’s passing of the national security law, reports Hong Kong Standard.
