Pakistan: Teachers decide to shut down 22,000 primary schools to press for their demands

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa All-Primary Teachers Association (APTA) has announced 22,000 boys and girls primary schools across the Pakistani province will remain shut from Wednesday until further notice.

The teachers made the move to press for their demands.

The teachers are even planning to hold a sit-in at Jinnah Park.

Thousands of people from across the province are expected to join the rally.

The Education Department has decided to take action against the teachers involved in the incident.

On the other hand, APTA Provincial President Azizullah stated that the K-P minister for education had invited them for negotiations, reported The Express Tribune.

In response to a question, Azizullah mentioned that due to the anticipated crackdown on their officials, all their phones are off, and they are keeping a low profile.

He said the government was given ample time but the decision to shut down schools was taken only after the government failed accept their demands.

"Schools will only reopen once the government issues an official upgradation notification for teachers, as there will be no compromise on this demand. Teachers are united; they have made sacrifices in the past and are prepared to face any difficulty to secure their rights" he told the newspaper.
