Pressure mounts on South African President Jacob Zuma to step down
Cape Town, Feb 5 (IBNS): Amid talks with senior members of ANC party, pressure has started to grow on South President President Jacob Zuma, media reports said.
Senior members of the ANC party met on Sunday.
"Details of the talks were not revealed but party leaders are to hold an emergency meeting on Monday," BBC reported.
Zuma is currently facing corruption allegations.
Cyril Ramaphosa had replaced him as ANC leader.
BBC reported analysts say party chiefs want to avoid a power struggle that could split the ANC before elections next year.
Julius Malema, an opposition leader and former ANC member, tweeted and said Zuma has rejected to step down from his post.
"He refused to resign and he told them to take a decision to remove him if they so wish to do so because he didn’t do anything wrong to the country. He’s arguing that he complied with all legal instructions including paying back the money, what more do they want from him," Julius tweeted.
The President is unlikely to leave office until the 2019 elections.
Amid a weakening economy and claims of corruption, the ANC has witnessed a drop in its popularity during Zuma's second term.
